Who We Are

91³Ô¹ÏÍø is a Jesuit, Catholic university committed to the educational and spiritual traditions of the Society of Jesus and the development of the whole person.

Accordingly, the University inspires students to learn, lead, and serve in a diverse and changing world.

Founded in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1852 by the Society of Jesus, Loyola University Maryland is the first institution of higher learning in the United States to bear the name of its founder, St. Ignatius Loyola.

At Loyola, the ideals that have guided Jesuit universities for nearly 500 years—academic excellence, care for the whole person, service, justice, diversity, and integrity—among others, continue to mold the academic, social, and spiritual experiences we offer our students, the programs we pursue, and the relationships we build with our surrounding communities.

The benefits of Loyola’s Jesuit, liberal arts experience lead to a life-long approach of learning and questioning and critical analysis that prepare our alumni for—and set them apart in—the workforce and the world.

For more than a century, Loyola's Evergreen campus has served as a picturesque backdrop for learning, teaching, and campus life—and the launchpad for living out our mission. A certified level II arboretum, our campus is nationally ranked and regionally recognized not only for its beauty, but for sustainability achievements and preservation efforts, community development initiatives, safety, and, of course, our collegiate experience.
